Perimenopause in Your Late 30s? New Research Says the Story May Start Earlier Than We Thought ๐ฌ๐ฟ
For years, women in their late 30s and early 40s have walked into healthcare appointments saying:
โSomething has changed.โ
Their sleep is different. Their periods feel different. Anxiety suddenly shows up uninvited. Their tolerance for stress has packed its bags. They are exhausted, bloated, forgetful, irritableโor simply do not feel like themselves.
And too many have heard:
โYouโre too young for perimenopause.โ
Wellโฆscience is giving us another reason to rethink that conversation.
A major 2026 study published in Nature Medicine suggests that some of the biological changes associated with the menopause transition may begin more than a decade before a womanโs final menstrual period.
That means for some women, the hormonal story may already be changing in their mid-to-late 30s.
And ladies, that is not bad news.
That is an opportunity.
๐ฌ Waitโฆ12โ15 YEARS Before Menopause?!
Researchers analyzed more than 300 million laboratory tests from more than one million women using large datasets from the United States and Israel.
Rather than simply comparing women by age, researchers reconstructed physiological changes according to how close women were to their final menstrual period.
Of the 90 laboratory markers examined, 52 showed significant menopause-associated shifts involving endocrine, bone, liver, kidney, lipid and blood-related systems.
But this is where things get really interesting.
Researchers found accelerated changes in:
โข AMH โ approximately 15 years before the final menstrual period
โข FSH โ approximately 14 years before
โข Estradiol โ approximately 12 years before
So, if a womanโs final period occurs around age 50, some underlying hormonal changes could begin around age 35โ38.
Does this mean every 37-year-old woman is officially in perimenopause?
No.
Perimenopause is still a reproductive transition that is influenced by menstrual-cycle changes, reproductive physiology and the individual woman.
But this study strengthens an important message:
Your biology can begin changing before your period makes the announcement.
๐๐พโโ๏ธ PractitionerโฆMeet Perimenopause
I do not talk about this only as your Traditional Naturopath and Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner.
Like many women, I am navigating perimenopause too.
So yes, I understand the science.
I also understand having moments when your body starts behaving differently and you are thinking:
โExcuse me, maโam. Since when do we do THIS?โ ๐
Some women experience obvious changes such as:
โข Heavier, lighter or unpredictable periods
โข Sleep disturbances
โข Hot flushes or night sweats
โข Anxiety or mood changes
โข Brain fog
โข Fatigue
โข Headaches
โข Breast tenderness
โข Palpitations
โข Changes in libido
โข Body-composition changes
โข Joint or muscle discomfort
โข Digestive changes
โข Vaginal or bladder symptoms
โข Changes in hair and skin
But here is something we do not talk about enough:
Not every woman has dramatic symptoms.
Some women transition with subtle signs.
Some continue having relatively regular periods.
Some do not recognize what has changed until they look backward.
That is exactly why education matters.
๐ง Menopause Is NOT Just About Your Ovaries
One of my favorite things about this new study is that it reinforces something women desperately need to hear:
Menopause is a whole-body transition.
Researchers found changes involving bone metabolism, liver markers, lipids, kidney-related markers, blood measures, osmolality and endocrine physiologyโnot simply estradiol and FSH.
Sex hormones communicate with tissues throughout the body, including the brain, blood vessels, bones, liver and adipose tissue.
So when hormones start shifting, women may experience much more than changes to their periods.
This is why dismissing everything as:
โWell, youโre getting olderโฆโ
simply is not good enough anymore.
๐๐พ Finally, Womenโs Health Is Getting More Attention
I am encouraged to see conventional medicine and scientific research taking menopause much more seriously.
We are seeing menopause increasingly investigated as a multisystem physiological transition rather than treating it as nothing more than the day menstruation stops.
That matters.
And I do not believe conventional and functional healthcare need to be enemies.
Good medicine has its place.
Hormone therapy may have its place.
Nutrition has its place.
Lifestyle medicine has its place.
Functional assessment has its place.
The woman should be at the center of all of it.
In naturopathic and functional health, we often ask another question alongside:
โWhat symptom are you having?โ
We also ask:
โWhat may be contributing to why YOUR body is struggling?โ
That is where root-cause thinking becomes valuable.
๐ฌFun Fact Science Bar
Did You Know Your Hot Flush May Start in Your Brain?
Did you know hot flushes are not simply your body โgetting too hotโ? As estrogen declines and fluctuates, a group of hypothalamic brain cells called KNDy neurons can become more active. These neurons help regulate both reproductive signalling and body temperature, and increased neurokinin B signalling can trigger inappropriate heat-loss responsesโhello sudden flushing, sweating and night sweats. ๐ฅต๐ง
๐๐พ Translation: Your internal thermostat may temporarily become much more sensitive. A small temperature change that once went unnoticed can suddenly have your body declaring, โEVERYONE OUTโWE'RE ON FIRE!โ ๐
โจ Healing Opportunity: Track patterns around sleep, stress, meals, caffeine, room temperature and cycle changes. Support your foundations with hydration, restorative sleep, regular movement and nourishing meals, while discussing appropriate hormonal or non-hormonal options with your healthcare team when symptoms are disruptive.
โ๏ธ Faith Element: Your changing body is not a failed body. โI am fearfully and wonderfully made.โ โ Psalm 139:14, KJV. Understanding what is happening gives us another opportunity to practice wise stewardship rather than fear the transition. ๐ฟ
๐งฉ Beyond Hormones: What Is Adding to Your Metabolic Chaosยฎ?
Two women can be the same age, at a similar stage of perimenopause, and experience it completely differently.
Why?
Because hormones do not operate alone.
We look at possible influences such as:
๐ฅ Nutrient status
๐ฉธ Blood-sugar regulation
๐ฆ Gut health
๐ฆ Thyroid function
๐ง Stress physiology
๐ฅ Inflammatory burden
๐ค Sleep quality
๐ซ Metabolic and cardiovascular health
๐งฌ Genetic tendencies
๐๐พโโ๏ธ Muscle and movement
๐ฟ Lifestyle and environmental exposures
Within Functional Diagnostic Nutritionยฎ, we often describe these interconnected dysfunction patterns as Metabolic Chaosยฎ.
Rather than chasing every symptom individually, we are looking for patterns and healing opportunities.
๐งช Testing: Looking for Clues, Not Chasing a Perfect Number
Functional testing helps us look beyond symptoms and identify patterns, predispositions and possible contributors to Metabolic Chaosยฎ that may influence how a woman experiences perimenopause.
Depending on the woman, I may use:
DUTCHยฎ โ looks at hormone patterns, cortisol and hormone metabolites, helping us understand how reproductive and stress hormones are being produced and metabolized.
DNAlifeยฎ Hormones, Health & Mind โ provides insight into genetic tendencies involving hormone metabolism, inflammation, detoxification, neurotransmitters and stress response.
COMT is one fascinating example. COMT helps metabolize catecholamines such as dopamine, adrenaline and noradrenaline, along with catechol estrogens.
Genetic variants can influence COMT activity, which may help explain why some women appear more sensitive to stress, mood changes, cognitive changes or hormonal fluctuations during perimenopause.
Someone with slower or faster COMT activity may experience the hormonal transition differently, both physically and mentally.
Genetics do not write your destinyโbut they can give us another piece of your individual physiological puzzle.
Functional Blood Chemistry Analysis (FBCA) โ helps us investigate blood sugar, insulin, iron, thyroid function, liver markers, nutrients, inflammation and cardiovascular patterns.
GI-MAPยฎ โ helps us explore gut microbial patterns, digestive function and intestinal health that may be influencing nutrient availability, inflammation and overall resilience.
MRTยฎ โ can provide additional clues when food-related inflammatory responses appear to be contributing to a womanโs symptom picture.
The goal is not a mountain of tests.
It is connecting the clues. ๐งฉ
Hormones + genetics + gut health + nutrient status + stress + metabolism + lifestyle give us a much better picture of why YOU may be experiencing perimenopause the way you areโand where your healing opportunities may be.
๐ฟ Before the Fancy StuffโฆBuild the Foundation
Functional healthcare is not about throwing 37 supplements at a woman and wishing her hormones good luck. ๐
Foundational health still matters tremendously.
That means looking at:
๐ฅฆ Whole-food nutrition
๐๐พโโ๏ธ Strength training and regular movement
๐ด Restorative sleep
๐ Appropriate sunlight exposure
๐ง Hydration
๐ง Stress and nervous-system support
๐ฆ Digestive health
๐ฉธ Blood-sugar stability
๐ฟ Reducing unnecessary environmental burden
๐๐พ Spiritual health and trust in God
As a naturopath, these principles are close to my heart.
And as a Seventh-day Adventist Christian, I appreciate how beautifully many of these foundations reflect principles our health message has emphasized for generationsโnutrition, exercise, water, sunlight, temperance, fresh air, rest and trust in God.
โI will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.โ
โ Psalm 139:14, KJV
Our bodies were created with extraordinary interconnectedness.
Supporting health means respecting that whole picture.
๐ Ladies, This Is GOOD News
You might be thinking:
โWonderful. Now youโre telling me this starts in my 30s?!โ ๐
But hear me out.
Earlier awareness gives us something incredibly valuable:
TIME.
Time to support bone health.
Time to build muscle.
Time to improve metabolic health.
Time to investigate iron and nutrient status.
Time to protect sleep.
Time to address gut problems.
Time to understand our hormones.
Time to discuss appropriate medical and hormonal options when needed.
Time to strengthen the foundations before our bodies are screaming for help.
Perimenopause does not need to be something that blindsides us.
And aging is not something we need to fear.
We can prepare.
We can learn.
We can ask better questions.
We can pay attention sooner.
And we can enter this next season of womanhood informed rather than confused.
Now that is empowering. ๐ฟ

Pomegranate arils
Light dusting of cinnamon
๐ฉ๐พโ๐ณ Step-by-Step Instructions
1. ๐พ Make the Rustic Crust
Preheat your oven to 190ยฐC / 375ยฐF.
In a large bowl, combine the buckwheat flour, oat flour, ground almonds, flaxseed, cinnamon, and sea salt.
Work in the almond butter with a fork until the mixture looks crumbly.
Add the maple syrup and slowly add the soy milk, a little at a time, until the dough just holds together.
Shape the dough into a ball, flatten it into a disc, and chill for about 10 minutes.
2. ๐ Prepare the Autumn Filling
In a bowl, gently toss the sliced persimmons and chopped chestnuts with the orange zest, orange juice, maple syrup, cinnamon, allspice, cardamom, arrowroot powder, and vanilla.
Let the mixture sit for about 5 minutes so all those gorgeous autumn flavors can get acquainted. ๐๐
3. ๐ฅง Build the Galette
Place the chilled dough between two sheets of baking paper.
Roll it into a rustic circle approximately 30 cm / 12 inches wide.
Remove the top sheet of baking paper.
Arrange the persimmon slices in the center of the dough, leaving about a 5 cm / 2-inch border around the edge.
Scatter the chopped chestnuts throughout the filling.
Gently fold the edges of the dough inward over the fruit.
Do not worry about making it perfect.
Rustic is the goalโwe are not auditioning for pastry school. ๐
4. ๐ฅ Bake Until Golden
Transfer the galette, still on the baking paper, onto a baking tray.
Bake for 35โ40 minutes, or until the crust is golden and firm and the persimmons are soft, glossy, and lightly caramelized.
Allow it to rest for about 10 minutes before slicing.
5. ๐ค Make the Vanilla-Orange Cream
While the galette cools slightly, stir together the soy yogurt, almond butter, vanilla, orange zest, and maple syrup until smooth and creamy.
6. โจ Give Her the Restaurant Treatment
Slice the warm galette and top each serving with a generous spoonful of vanilla-orange cream.
Finish with:
โค๏ธ Pomegranate arils
๐ฐ Chopped roasted chestnuts
๐ Fresh orange zest
โจ A light dusting of cinnamon
Serve warm and enjoy.
And when someone asks whether this is really whole-food plant-based, just smile mysteriously and keep eating. ๐๐
๐ฟ Health Benefits of the Ingredients
๐งก Persimmons
Persimmons provide fiber, vitamin C, carotenoids, and polyphenols. Their naturally honey-like sweetness makes them perfect for desserts without relying heavily on added sugars.
๐ฐ Chestnuts
Chestnuts are different from most nuts because they are naturally lower in fat and provide complex carbohydrates, fiber, potassium, vitamin C, and several B vitamins.
๐พ Buckwheat
Buckwheat is a naturally gluten-free pseudograin that provides fiber, magnesium, and antioxidant plant compounds including rutin.
๐พ Oats
Oats contain beta-glucan soluble fiber, which supports digestive health, healthy cholesterol levels, satiety, and steadier post-meal blood sugar.
๐ฐ Almonds & Almond Butter
Almonds provide vitamin E, magnesium, plant protein, and unsaturated fats while adding richness and texture to the crust and cream.
๐ฑ Flaxseed
Ground flaxseed provides fiber, plant-based ALA omega-3 fatty acids, and lignansโphytonutrients often studied in relation to cardiovascular and womenโs health.
๐ฅ Organic Soy Yogurt
Soy yogurt adds plant protein and naturally occurring soy isoflavones while giving the vanilla-orange topping a creamy, slightly tangy texture.
๐ Orange
Fresh orange provides vitamin C and citrus flavonoids while adding brightness that beautifully balances the warm spices and naturally sweet fruit.
โค๏ธ Pomegranate
Pomegranate adds fiber, colorful polyphenols, and gorgeous jewel-like color.
๐ฟ Cinnamon, Cardamom & Allspice
These warming spices provide aromatic plant compounds and allow us to build rich autumn flavor without piling on extra sweetener.
๐ Why This Dessert Fits the Perimenopause Conversation
Midlife nutrition does not need to become restrictive, boring, or fearful.
This dessert brings together:
๐ฟ Fiber-rich plants
๐พ Whole grains
๐ฑ Seeds
๐ฅ Plant protein
๐ฐ Healthy fats
๐ Colorful phytonutrients
โค๏ธ Naturally sweet whole foods
And there is something beautifully fitting about a galette during perimenopause.
It is a little rustic.
It changes shape as it bakes.
It may not look exactly how it started.
And somehow it comes out warmer, richer, and even more interesting.
Sounds suspiciously like midlife. ๐๐๐ฟ
Different season. Not lesser woman.

The Nature Medicine study is particularly strong for your blog's central argument: it found accelerated AMH decline around 15 years, FSH rise around 14 ยฑ 1 years, and estradiol decline around 12 ยฑ 1 years before the final menstrual period. So your late-30s discussion is supportable as long as we phrase it as measurable hormonal changes may begin in the mid-to-late 30s, rather than claiming every woman clinically enters perimenopause at 35โ38.
